UST wins UAAP 72 crown, FEU at third

UST Growling Tigers won its 37th overall Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) championship, stamping its mark as the winningest varsity team in league history.

The Tigers amassed 307 points, 55 points ahead of runner-up De La Salle University Green Archers (252 points).

At third place is the FEU Tamaraws amassing 229 points and fourth placer Ateneo Blue Eagles with 222 points.

Last year's second runner-up UP Fighting Maroons faltered this season, going down two spots to finish at fifth with 217 points while the UE Red Warriors (181 points), Adamson Falcons (101 points), and the NU Bulldogs (44 points), remained at sixth, seventh, and last place, respectively.

A champion in a UAAP event scores 15 points towards the overall championship; second place, 12 points; third place, 10 points; fourth place, eight points; fifth place, six points; sixth place, four points; seventh place, two points; and last place, one point.

Men's division

In the men's division, the Tigers won the volleyball, beach volleyball, tennis, badminton, and taekwondo championships. They settled for second place in table tennis, fencing, judo, and football, and won bronze medals in swimming and chess.

The Blue Eagles are the reigning champions in basketball and judo; runners-up in swimming; and third placers in volleyball, badminton, track and field, and taekwondo.

The Green Archers won the swimming title while getting silver medals in tennis, badminton, and taekwondo, as well as a bronze medal in football.

The Tamaraws, though getting gold medals in chess, table tennis, and football, did not participate in swimming, tennis, judo, and baseball. They landed at second in volleyball, beach volleyball, and track and field; and third in basketball.

The Fighting Maroons failed to win a championship and landed at third in beach volleyball, table tennis, tennis, fencing, judo, and baseball.

The Red Warriors are champions in fencing and track and field, and are runners-up in chess and basketball, but performed poorly in other sports.

The Falcons and the Bulldogs shone in baseball, where they won the gold and silver medals, respectively. Adamson won its third straight baseball crown.

Women's division

In the women's division, the Tigresses were champions in volleyball and softball while snatching runner-up trophies in table tennis, tennis, track and field, taekwondo, and football.

The Lady Archers are champions in football, badminton, and tennis; runners-up in volleyball; and third placers in basketball, beach volleyball, swimming, chess, table tennis, taekwondo, and judo.

The Lady Tamaraws captured the most crowns, winning the taekwondo, table tennis, track and field, and chess titles. They received silver medals in basketball and beach volleyball, and bronze medals in badminton, fencing, and football.

The Lady Eagles were second place in swimming and chess, and third place in tennis and volleyball.

The Lady Maroons, though they won gold medals in swimming and judo, as well as a bronze medal in softball, failed in other sports.

Fencing proved to be the favorite sport for the red camp as the Lady Warriors were also crowned champions. They landed at the second spot in badminton and third in track and field.

The Lady Falcons, though they won the basketball and beach volleyball golds and the softball silver, failed to participate in eight of the 14 sports. The Lady Bulldogs' best finish, on the other hand, was at fifth place in chess.

Juniors' championships

In the high school race, the UST Tiger Cubs won their 12th overall title with 133 points.

The Ateneo High School Eaglets, meanwhile, dislodged the University of the East Pages at second spot, with the former scoring 119 points and the latter, 106 points.

The De La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers landed at fourth spot (72 points); the University of the Philippines Integrated School Junior Maroons is at fifth (64 points); the Far Eastern University-FERN Junior Tamaraws placed sixth (46 points); the Adamson Junior Falcons went down to seventh place (35 points); and the National University Bullpups were at last place (28 points).

Notes: UAAP Season 73 will be hosted by DLSU, in time for the celebration of its 100th founding anniversary.
