Serene Learning at FEU Silang

FEU Silang

It is a fact that the environment we provide for our students influences their ability to learn. Students learn better, absorb lessons faster and end up doing well in school and in the real world when they are provided with excellent education combined with world-class facilities.

With this guiding principle in mind, Far Eastern University has turned to the south for the new addition to its expanding network of schools. FEU Silang, the newest addition to the Far Eastern University group, recently opened its new campus in Silang, Cavite. The opening of the campus is a testament of the university’s commitment to provide both foreign and local students residing in Cavite and nearby provinces high-quality education rooted in the heritage of excellence.

Located at the sprawling MetroGate Silang Estates in Cavite, FEU Silang will give its students the best of both worlds: world-class quality education and a serene, secure environment minutes away from major thoroughfares and commercial establishments.

In a press conference recently held at the school’s site, FEU-Silang’s executive director, Dr. Felipe Balingit Jr., had this to say: “At FEU Silang, we want our students to embrace the learning experience and to immerse themselves in academic pursuits. We want them to enjoy the excellent facilities in a place where they will be free from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle that is Metro Manila. The peaceful community of Silang is a perfect environment for learning. Our teachers are experts in their field who are committed to help students build the foundations for success.” He further added, “The response from the local community of Silang, as well as the adjacent cities of Dasmarinas and Tagaytay, has been great. Parents and students are elated at the thought of having a premiere educational institution near their homes.”

He also said that they chose Cavite, Silang, in particular, for being one of the fastest growing places in the country aside from the area being unpolluted and highly-elevated.

Aside from its location, FEU Silang prides itself for its state-of-art facilities and equipment for all its spacious classrooms. The Nicanor Reyes Hall will house all pre-school, grade school and high school operations, while the College Building is dedicated to house all higher education programs and the Center for Continuing Education.

With a wide range of programs from pre-school to college courses in hotel and restaurant management, tourism management, education and business administration, FEU Silang is equipped with learning laboratories for skills and hands-on training. A practical nursing laboratory provides students taking up allied health courses learning facilities based on Canadian standards. The Silang Suites is a mock-up of a five-star hotel with kitchen laboratories that boast of the latest culinary equipment. According to Narzalina Lim, former Secretary of Tourism and FEU Silang consultant, “With its state-of-the-art laboratories and learning facilities, as well as strong local and international partnerships with key tourism industry players and academic institutions, FEU Silang will soon be one of the leading providers of tourism and hospitality education in the country.”

The school also took their responsibility to the environment seriously by making sure they build energy-efficient buildings. Architect Daniel Lichauco of Archion Architects and the school’s designer/planner, says, “FEU is one of the most progressive and environmentally conscious schools. We made sure that the energy consumption of the FEU Silang will be as low as possible, incorporating in the design for the hot air to escape from the building and not accumulate throughout. The school will also have rainwater harvesting system, a cistern to collect rainwater thus leaving low carbon footprints. We also want a facility that would allow teachers to teach and students to learn.”

The buildings’ design, according to Lichauco, was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and has a little of a tropical/prairie, but all FEU look.

As an observation, buildings do please the senses; as one walks around, you get the sense of peace, serenity that instantly puts you in relaxed mood, which is perfectly conducive to learning and absorbing those academic inputs. The danger, as one visitor jokes, is that students get so relaxed, they might get sleepy! But with the naturally high metabolism and energy a young body generates, the natural tendency of the young to be constantly moving, it’s highly unlikely. So the place just have the perfect enough balance to even things out, the place would at least temper the boisterous nature of the students, enabling them to be receptive to good education.

“On behalf of the entire FEU community, I congratulate FEU Silang for opening its doors this 2010. I welcome all its students, faculty and staff to the FEU family. I look forward to bigger and better things for our newest campus and our students. It is FEU’s vision to provide students with globally competitive education without the need to go to Manila,” said Dr. Lydia Echauz, Far Eastern University president. “I would like to invite residents of Silang, Cavite, as well as residents from nearby towns and cities to enroll at FEU-Silang and experience the learning process imbued in fortitude, excellence and uprightness in which FEU is rooted on.”

FEU Silang officially opens its doors to eager, young minds on June 7.
