FEU confirms case on A (H1N1)

In our previous article, we revealed some speculations going around Far Eastern University in Manila of having a case of A (H1N1) otherwise known as the swine flu virus [see previous post]. A (H1N1) has become an epidemic spreading out in almost 65 countries, including the Philippines with 125 deaths in the latest count of the World Health Organization (WHO).

FEU finally confirmed a case of A (H1N1) on its female student from FEU-East Asia College whose identity is kept undisclosed to the public, as everybody else with confirmed cases in the country, which by the way soared to 44, to date.* The student was brought to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Alabang for further observation. The female student had a flu-like symptom; and it was reported also that nearly 100 students had flu just last week thus forcing FEU to defer the class opening for precautionary measures.

As we look back, DLSU in Taft had cases also of A (H1N1) from three of its students, more recently from a male local student.** Health Authorities concluded that he might have been infected in the campus; the school then, decided to close for 10 days. Fortunately, In an update from the Department of Health, the three cases from DLSU were responding very well in the treatment.

Cases in FEU and DLSU prompted the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to cancel the opening of classes of all colleges and university under its fold. Purposely to give these institutions time to prepare, especially universities with foreign students, as in case of La Salle and FEU. On the other hand, the Department of Education said that opening of classes on public elementary and high school institutions will continue as scheduled for the reason that students from public schools rarely travel abroad; While, private elementary and secondary schools were let to decide on their own.

*In its latest update, the health department said there are now 247 confirmed A(H1N1) cases in the country. Of these, 85 were already discharged.

**There are 4 new cases of A(H1N1) from DLSU; totaling to 7 cases from La Salle Taft alone.
