FEU postpones opening of classes

BREAKING NEWS: The Office of Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Arch. Miguel Carpio officially announced today (June 5, 2009) the postponement of the opening of classes of Far Eastern University from Monday (June 8, 2009) to Wednesday of Next Week (June 17, 2009). The sudden announcement was due to the “University’s precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Influenza A(H1N1) virus infection”. Facial Masks were distributed this day among FEU Faculties, Employees and some students and late enrollees were seen to be wearing masks also. A 3rd Year FEU nursing student commented on the situation and said “the atmosphere [today] is scary, the virus might be imminent”.

According to some unconfirmed reports, a student from FEU – EAST ASIA COLLEGE was believed to have been inflicted with the virus, hence the suspension of classes. The office of the VPAA of FEU reiterated that “the FEU Community is advised to follow the Guidelines and Preventive Measures earlier issued in the FEU-UHS Health Advisory.” Meanwhile, two days ago (June 3, 2009) De La Salle University-Taft school officials announced that they were closing the university for 10 days after a confirmed 21-year old female foreign exchange student tested positive for the A(H1N1) flu virus. According to health authorities, the infected female could have come into contact with up to 120 other people. A short notice from Chancellor and president Bro. Armin Luistro posted outside La Salle Taft building states that “The academic community is advised to monitor flu-like symptoms, to stay away from crowds, and to practice good hygiene”.

In an advisory today, both University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines-Manila will likewise defer the opening of classes (June 8 to June 15). “As a precautionary measure against influenza A (H1N1) and in order to allow students, support staff, faculty members and administrators who arrived from travel abroad to voluntary quarantine, the University of Santo Tomas defers the opening of classes.” said by UST Secretary General Father Isidro Abano.

In a media conference, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that “A(H1N1) is a mild form of influenza with less than a one per cent fatality rate; You should fear dengue more than A(H1N1)”. Everyone was therefore advised to stay calm and need not to panic; most importantly to maintain proper hygiene as simple as washing your hands. The symptoms of this new H1N1 flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this new H1N1 virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.
