PIYU 2010: Year in Review


As we welcome the year 2011, lets look back at some of the top stories  we’ve covered concerning the Far Eastern University (Tamaraw) community – the FEU 2010 year in review highlights the most relevant news and pressing issues of 2010 by month.


JANUARY 2010

(January 4) MARTIAL LAW IN FEU –  The infamous term was dubbed by Professor Joey Ting, president of the FEU Faculty Association. The issue stemmed from an alleged maltreatment of the new security guards to Mr. Ting. “In my eight years in the university, this is the first time I was physically touched and hurt by a security guard.”, Mr. Ting wrote. read full story

(January 20) STUDENT PROTEST IN FEU – A group of students staged a protest in front of the FEU Administration Building, condemning among others the “Martial Law” incident. The protest coincided with  FEU’s 82nd foundation week celebration.

(January 22) VICE GANDA IN FEU – It was during the 82nd founding anniversary of FEU (FEU concert) when Jose Marie Viceral popularly known as Vice Ganda  was reunited once again with his alma mater, the concert also featured Spongecola and some homegrown FEU Talents. Reportedly, it was the most attended FEU concert in recent memory.  “Bago pa ako naging isang kabayo, isa akong Tamaraw”, says Vice.





FEBRUARY 2010

altFEU GRAD TOPS MEDICAL BOARD – Marie Jo-Ann Beltran Cabanting of FEU – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation ranked first out of the 621 passers  in the Physician Licensure Examination which was released February 2010. FEU-NRMF takes pride to be included among the top medical institution in Asia as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.


MARCH 2010

  • UST WINS THE OVER-ALL UAAP 72 CROWN, FEU AT THIRD PLACE 
  • FACULTY STRIKE IN FEU – The FEU Faculty Union was supposed to have its first major protest rally against the FEU Administration, rumor of a no classes scenario spread like wildfire until the planned strike was cancelled after both parties reached a Memorandum of Agreement.
  • FEU ADVO TURNS 75 – FEU Advocate, the official student publication of Far Eastern University celebrated its 75th anniversary and 12th year revival.
  • THE ABS-CBN HARAPAN Forum in FEU – The first-ever historic face off (tandem debate) of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates was supposed to happen in Far Eastern University, March 28th Sunday. However, two days prior the event, ABS-CBN cancelled the forum, after candidates declined to participate. The Gibo-Edu tandem was the first to decline the invitation because of other commitments.
alt(March 28) TRANSFORMERS RALLY IN FEU – Gordon-Bayani supporters assembled outside FEU. The tandem including Bro. Eddie Villanueva and Perfecto Yasay were the  only two who confirmed attendance for the scheduled HARAPAN debate.

APRIL 2010

  • (April 15) THE CONTROVERSIAL MANNY PANGILINAN SPEAKS AT THE FEU GRADUATION RITES – Businessman (PLDT Chairman, owner of TV 5 and Smart Telecommunications) Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) delivered a graduation speech during FEU’s 82nd commencement exercises despite being hounded by a plagiarism controversy. read full story
  • FEU SILANG OPENS (classes officially started on June 7) Far Eastern University opened a new campus in Silang, Cavite to offer local and foreign residents of the South the quality education and outstanding heritage it has been known for through the years


MAY 2010

(May 23) TAMARAW TRACKSTER BREAKS PHILIPPINE RECORD – a UAAP Athlete himself, Jesson Cid stole the limelight in the last day of the 2010 Milo National Open Track and Field championship when he topped the boys’ decathlon in record-breaking fashion, a new Philippine record was set. He ruled 9 out of 10 events and amassed a total of 6,094 points en route to erasing the 5,535 former mark of Darius de Rosas in 1980.


JUNE 2010


altCHED announced that Far Eastern University (Manila campus) topped the schools in Rank 1, with more than 1,000 nursing examinees that passed the 2009 twin licensure exams with 74.62 percent. inset photo – Manila Bulletin’s June 2, 2010 issue.

  • FEU Cheering Squad’s second Eat Bulaga guesting as UAAP champ
  • (June 22) NO SMOKING ZONE IN UBELT? Manila Police roamed around UBelt, confiscating packs of cigarettes being sold publicly in the area. The confiscation was covered by both ABS-CBN and GMA 7. read full story
  • (June 24) FEU PREXY AMONG OUTSTANDING MANILANS – FEU President Dr. Lydia B. Echauz was listed as among the outstanding Manilans for 2010, alongside President Aquino, Cardinal Rosales and Bro. Armin Luistro, to name a few. June 24 was a special non-working holiday in Manila as the city celebrates its 439th foundation day.

AUGUST 2010

  • (August 10) NBA FIT CAMP IN FEU – Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra visited the FEU Campus as part of the NBA Fit Camp. FEU is one of the only two UAAP schools (the other one is De La Salle University) to be given a chance to undergo this professional / exclusive fitness program – the NBA way. Meanwhile during day, TV personality TJ Manatoc shares his “Hepalane” encounter. read full story
  • (August 12) ADAMSON HANDS FEU ITS FIRST LOSS IN UAAP 73
  • (August 23) FEU LAW DEAN APPOINTED AS PCGG CHAIR – President Benigno Aquino has appointed Far Eastern University Institute of Law dean Juan Andres Bautista as chairman of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) to replace Camilo Sabio.

SEPTEMBER 2010

  • (September 12) 2010 UAAP CHEERDANCE COMPETITION – The UP Pep Squad reclaimed the Cheerdance crown, while defending champion FEU Cheering Squad settled as 1st runner up. read full story

altRR GARCIA BAGS UAAP 73 MVP AWARD – FEU Sophomore cager Ryan Roose Garcia captured the UAAP 73 Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) recognition for topping the individual statistical points and most importantly for leading the Tamaraw squad even at the jaws of defeat as they ended the elimination round as the top seeded team with 12-2 win loss card, the team’s best finish since winning the crown in 2005.
  • (September 25) ATENEO NEARS THREE-PEAT – Ateneo moved a win shy of a rare three-peat in the UAAP, after a surprising blowout win against top seeded Far Eastern University, 72-49. Game 1 of the finals aired for the first time via ABS-CBN Channel 2.
  • (September 31) ATENEO COMPLETES A GRAND SLAM – The Ateneo Blue Eagles placed themselves in UAAP’s history book after duplicating the rare three-peat made by their junior’s counterpart through a finals sweep of the FEU Tamaraws in Game 2, 65-62


OCTOBER 2010

  • THE 1ST FEU CAR SHOW – The first-ever FEU Car Show was participated by no more than 20 car owners. It was held on October 8 at the FERN Parking Lot near the FEU Manila campus.

(October 10) RUN FOR PASIG RIVER – Participated by the FEU community, the 10-10-10 Run for Pasig River successfully made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest footrace event in the world with a total of 116, 086 runners.


NOVEMBER 2010

UNIGAMES 2010 RESULTS –  FEU copped gold medals in Women's Table Tennis and Men's Volleyball, while Women's Chess and Women's Badminton settled for silvers. The Men's Basketball team took home a bronze at the expense of UAAP finals tormentor Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles.

(December  19) TAMS GAIN SOLO SECOND IN B-LEAGUE – The FEU team humbled league-leading Saint Clare Colleges via a 2-1 decision and racked up 8 out of 9 maximum points to gain solo second in the ongoing National Collegiate Billiards League.


alt(December 20) FEU’s STRONG FINISH IN ASIAN CHESS CHALLENGE – Eight Tamaraws made it to the over-all Top Ten individual ranking (men’s and women’s division combined) of the 15th Grand Asian Chess Challenge, held annually in Malaysia.
