Tamaraws close in on first round sweep

Far Eastern University (FEU) moved to one game shy of a first-round sweep with a 74-65 triumph over Adamson University on Sunday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 73 men’s basketball tournament at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Falcons attempted to get back at the Tamaraws at the end of the third period, closing in with seven points gap, 51-58, but FEU head coach Glenn Capacio sent back his starters to end the assault. Aldrech Ramos, Ping Exciminiano and RR Garcia racked up eight straight points to douse the fire and register their sixth win in as many games.

With his impressive performance last week, Garcia earned the distinction of being the first two-time Accel-Filoil UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week (3rd week) winner this season. Garcia beat Ateneo's Eric Salamat and University of the East guard Paul Lee in the weekly citation

In the game against the Falcons, Garcia scored 16 points, Ramos 13, Pipo Noundou 11 and Jens Knuttel 10. FEU recorded  21 assists.

Adamson’s Alex Nuyles led all scorers with 23 points but didn’t get enough support from his teammates—point guard Jerick Canada was the only other Falcon in double figures with 11.

FEU goes for a first-round sweep when it faces UST on Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena. The Tamaraws also swept the first round in 2005 en route to the championship during the time of FEU superstars Arwind Santos, Mark Isip and Dennis Miranda.
