Far Eastern University President, Dr. Lydia B. Echauz was named as among the outstanding Manilans for 2010. Dr. Echauz who was also named last year as an outstanding Filipino for Education is described as exemplifying “the new breed of university presidents – professionally qualified, organizationally active, and nationally engaged.” In the words of prolific writer Isagani Cruz, Dr. Echauz “has personally served as a bridge between academe and industry. She is extremely effective in bringing together academic and business leaders that usually have widely different views on how to educate the youth.”
The Outstanding Manilan Award is conferred by the City of Manila annually as a recognition to men and women who were born, lived or studied in the city and whose achievements in their chosen profession or vocation have contributed to the development and promotion of the city.
Dr. Echauz is set to receive the award at the historic Manila Hotel on June 24th - the culmination of 439th “Araw ng Maynila” week-long celebration alongside other notable awardees, no less than President-elect Benigno Aquino III, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, De La Salle University's Brother Armin Luistro, University of Santo Tomas rector Reverend Rolando de la Rosa, businessmen Lucio Tan, Ricky Razon and Manolo Lopez, Justices Antonio Carpio and (FEU Alumnus) Edilberto Sandoval, and veteran comedian Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon.
