“After several years of being second or third place, we decided to adopt the sarimanok concept because it’s a bird that soars high."

The FEU Cheering squad bagged the 2009 Samsung-sponsored UAAP Cheerdance Competition Championship, clinching away the crown from title-favorites, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe and the defending champions, the UP Pep Squad in a jam-packed Araneta Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The Tamaraw Cheering Squad performed a clean and powerful routine showcasing the Sarimanok theme of the 72nd UAAP season. The Sarimanok concept was originally followed from the school’s logo, it is a mythical bird with colorful wings thus the theme of this year’s UAAP, “One Color, One Goal”.

The FEU squad went home with a prize of 225,000 pesos plus 35 units of cellphone from Samsung, but more than anything else the cheerdance title which they last won in 1998. FEU garnered a score of 86.1%, besting out Ateneo’s Blue Babble Battalion (last year’s fourth place) which came in 1st runner up at 83.4% and UP Pep Squad (defending champion) at 83.1%. Meanwhile the perennial favorite, UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (last year second place) fell to fourth place for the first time in many years which drew an 81 percentage score.
