FEU back on top with Ateneo

MANILA -- The Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws methodically wore down the National University (NU) Bulldogs to run away with a 76-66 win on Thursday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Araneta Coliseum. The Tamaraws clamped down on defense to record their to eighth win and tie the defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles on top with an  8-1 slate.

After allowing the Bulldogs to score 23 points in the opening period, the Tamaraws limited their overmatched opponents to less than 20 points in the last three quarters.Reil Cervantes returned from a one-game suspension to lead FEU with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Smart-Gilas RP Team members Andy Barroca and Aldrech Ramos also dished out solid games for the Tamaraws. Barroca also came away with 14 points on top of eight boards and two assists while Ramos put up an effortless double-double of 12 points to go with 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs engaged the more talented Tamaraws to a toe-to-toe battle in the first period where they only trailed by three, 23-26.
It was all downhill from there for the Bulldogs when Cervantes and Ramos imposed their might in the shaded lane.

“Hindi ko gusto yung execution namin.  Ang dami naming binigay na easy baskets. Kailangan pa naming magtrabaho,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio. The Tamaraws, who scored a much easier 82-57 rout of the Bulldogs in the first round, outrebounded their smaller opponents, 48-33, to fuel their running game. They led as much as 21 in the payoff period but slowed down in the closing minutes when they already had the win secured. Jewel Ponferrada and Jerome Tungcul, who escaped suspension, were non-factors in the game as the Bulldogs slumped back to the cellar with University of the Philippines and Adamson University, all of them now toting similar 2-7 cards.
