FEU awarded for environmental project

Far Eastern University’s “Save the Tamaraw project” was awarded with special citation from the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP). The said award recognizes the contribution of the university in the conservation and protection efforts in saving the Tamaraws, a mammal endemic to the island of Mindoro, Philippines. FEU takes the role of preserving the Tamaraw as it is the “official mascot” of the university’s athletic team. The project started way back 2005 and was organized by the Tamaraw Volunteers with the university’s  Office of Student Affairs and Community Services (OSACS). The main objective of this project is to raise awareness and involvement of the whole community to such preservation.

FEU President Dr. Lydia Echauz, in a press statement said “We thanked the the Management Association of the Philippines for the citation. It will certainly fuel our faith in the cause as it validates the commitment of the entire FEU Community in saving a global treasure that is the tamaraw.”

The award was given at a ceremony held at the InterContinental Hotel on the occasion of MAP’s CSR Leadership Challenge, which acknowledges companies with programs that support Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Manila Water Company was the recipient of the main award which according to MAP has truly made CSR part of the way it does business for it’s “Tubig Para Sa Barangay” wherein “Its CSR activity is not just a program, not an accessory or a hobby, but an integral part of the way it formulates its overall corporate strategy.” It is centered to low-income communities who were given access to potable water in a most affordable manner.

Note: To save tamaraws from eventual extinction, government established in 1979 its tamaraw captive breeding program. As of last year the official tamaraw count was at 263 (a significant increase compared to previous years); the official count this year is yet to be released; it is a collaborative effort of FEU, DENR, local government of Mindoro and other NGOs.
