FEU, Ateneo both outlast bitter rivals

There’s no better way to end the first round of UAAP Season 72 than matching up FEU with UE, aptly dubbed as “The Battle of the East”, where both teams are battling for the most number of UAAP men’s basketball titles (FEU with 19 titles while UE and UST has 18); and of course the aged long bitter clash, so to say, between Ateneo and La Salle where no one could seem to trace the origin of such rivalry.

In the early game of the Sunday’s Showdown at the Araneta Coliseum, FEU dominates UE from the beginning to its end, though the latter made a run during the last quarter, the nearest to the Tamaraw’s score was at 72-74. Once again FEU’s Aldrech Ramos led the Tamaraw to a double-double stellar performance with 14 points and 12 rebounds; also both Paul Sanga and RR Garcia was also at the peak of their performance, Sanga made a career-high of 13 points, while 14 points for Garcia in the ball game.

The Ateneo-La Salle match follows at 5pm in the afternoon as the crowd went in a sea of yellow, in tribute to late President Corazon Aquino. Ateneo wins the game in a come-from-behind fashion, starting at the end of the 3rd Quarter. While there was a deadlock at 54 points in the last quarter, Ateneo’s Rabeh Al-Hussaini gets injured and had him replaced. During the fourth quarter, Joshua Webb, Simon Atkins was awarded an unsportsmanlike foul giving two free throws and a ball possession for the Blue Eagles, the score was then tied to 57. In the last 17.2 seconds of the same quarter (Ateneo leads 67-64), Hyram Bagatsing of La Salle sends a baby home, nailing a 3 point shocker that sends the game to overtime. However during the overtime, La Salle was not able to maintain the momentum on their side as miscues continued to piled up.

Both games (FEU-UE and Ateneo-La Salle) ended up with the final score of 76-72. Ateneo grabs the share of the lead with the FEU Tamaraws at 6-1 win loss card, while both UE and La Salle, together with UST were also tied up in the 3rd-4th slot having a 4-3 slate.
