FEU still unbeaten in international chess fest

Representing the Philippines, reigning UAAP Chess champion both in men’s and women’s division, the Far Eastern University squad through John Ranel Morazo and Lennon Hart Salgados remain unbeaten in the ongoing GACC International Inter-Varsity Chess Championship being held at the University of Malaya in Malaysia.

Morazo slowed down the only super Grandmaster in the field by holding Maletin Pavel of Novosibirsk State Technological University in Russia, while Salgados racked up two-straight wins, the last against Zhang Changjie of Singapore, to match Morazo's 3.5 points. Both move closer to league leaders, including GM Bagheri Amir of Iran. 

The GACC International Inter-Varsity Chess Championship is a chess tournament employing the Swiss-system, it is organized by Tuanku Bahiyah Residential College, University of Malaya. The league is open to undergraduates from all over the globe.

The competition started last December 14 and will end on December 21.

The Far Eastern University, Philippine team participants are:

In 2007, The Philippines was invited to join for the first time – representing the men’s division were the FEU Tamaraws, the team nabbed the country’s first-ever championship in the 12th GACC and a runner up finish the following year. 

The Far Eastern University - Philippine team is  presently coached by Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and National Master Alex Milagrosa.
