University of Santo Tomas fashioned out a straight-set victory over an undermanned Far Eastern University squad, 25-9, 25-13, 25-13, to open its title-retention bid on a high note in the second game of the opening day of the seventh season of Shakey’s V-league, Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
MVP Aiza Maizo rammed in 17 hits while Maika Ortiz added 10 points for the Tigresses, also the defending UAAP champions who swept last year’s twin titles in the league.
“I’m very satisfied with our win. They played very well,” said UST coach Shaq delos Santos, who also drew nine points from Denise Santiago and seven hits from Angeli Tabaquero.
“But our main goal is to make it to the finals, especially now that the stakes are higher with the presence of the Thai imports.”
The Tigresses dished out a near-flawless game in their 58-minute romp over the Lady Tams who played with just one guest player in Ronerry dela Cruz of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta after failing to enlist sisters Michelle and Mayette Carolino.
FEU at the game, logged only 14-of-81 on attacks while no player scored in double figures on a day it paraded a new coach in Kid Santos substituting Nes Pamilar. Ace scorer Rachel Daquis, however, is expected to join the Lady Tams upon her arrival from Germany.
