FEU grabs Game 1 of the Finals

The Arena was literally filled over the rafters with supporters of La Salle and FEU, Sunday afternoon for the much awaited Game 1 of the UAAP 71 Women's Volleyball finals. FEU Lady Tamaraws won via 5 thrilling sets (25-16, 25-27, 21-25, 26-24, 10-15)  against the DLSU Lady Spikers. FEU, as usual started slow in the first set, but bounced back in the 2nd set thru combinations of plays from almost all of FEU's first six; noteworthily is the crucial drop balls of FEU's setter, April Jose that gave the momentum on the FEU side. With a similar play on the 3rd set FEU dominated La Salle in terms of attacks (16-11 of DLSU), sets (21 for FEU and 6 for DLSU), and 14 digs versus 9 digs from La Salle.

In the 4th set however, La Salle was able to capitalize on their 17 attacks compared to 13 of FEU; unforced errors for FEU piled up in the said set registering to 8 as against to the only 3 unforced error for La Salle. Also, in the last seconds of the 4th set, where FEU was 1 point shy of winning the match, Shaira Gonzales was injured from a block attempt and was immediately replaced by Mary Cabanag, Shaira was not able to return to the court.

The Game was then forced to a deciding set where FEU made a very good start and not letting La Salle to get near with them by spike attacks from Cherry Vivas, Rachel Daquis and Mica Morada, who ended up the match with an exclamation point, thus winning the Game 1 of the best of three volleyball championship. The best player of the match was no less, Mecaila Irish Morada, having 21 points with 18 attacks from the net, 1 block and 2 service aces. The Game 2 will be on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the same time and venue.
