Promising Tamaraw trackster - a UAAP Athlete himself, Jesson Cid stole the limelight on Sunday when he topped the boys’ decathlon in record-breaking fashion, a new Philippine record in the last day of the 2010 Milo National Open Track and Field championship at the Rizal Memorial Track Oval in Malate, Manila.
Decathlon is a combination of 10 track events namely 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m run, 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 run.
The 18-year-old Cid ruled nine out of 10 events and amassed a total of 6,094 points en route to erasing the 5,535 former mark of Darius de Rosas in 1980.
“I was overwhelmed when they told me that I broke the record. It was a great run and I’m looking forward to improve my mark in the coming years,” said Cid, a sophomore Physical Education student at Far Eastern University (FEU).
Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) President Go Teng Kok hailed the effort of Cid. “He has what it takes to be a champion in international scene. I already talked with my coaching staff to talk with the FEU management so we can invite him in the training pool, We’re preparing for the Youth Olympics in November or maybe he can join the team for the 2011 SEA Games,”said Go.
Tamaraw athletes for years, are dominating the field, even breaking Philippine and International record. Among those who have raised the bar of Philippine athletics are FEU alumni: Lydia de Vega, Elma Muros-Posadas and Marestella Torres.
