Gov’t suspends classes for the whole week

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said Tuesday that classes at the tertiary level in Metro Manila and other areas placed under state of calamity will remain suspended until Saturday (October 3, 2009). Students were encourage though to assist in reaching out the victims of the Typhoon. CHED Chairman Manuel Angeles made the announcement during a briefing of the National Disaster Coordinating Council in Camp Aguinaldo with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, which he later confirmed in a DZMM interview.

The suspension of most of the classes including colleges started last Saturday as Typhoon Ondoy ravages the entire Metropolis, in what is touted as the most devastating typhoon ever hit the National Capital Region and nearby provinces in decades. The rainfall caused by Ondoy, (international name Ketsana) to Metro Manila and nearby areas in a span of six hours on Saturday was the most in recorded history, surpassing the previous record for the National Capital Region in 1967, PAGASA said. There are 140 deaths to date, 32 are missing and almost half a million were displaced.
