UAAP 73 Volleyball: Double win for FEU

Over 2,000 volleyball fans, including comedienne Vice Ganda trooped to the Fil-Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan on Wednesday as the UAAP Season 73 Volleyball concludes its first round of eliminations and witness what could be a preview of this year’s championship.

FEU TAMS STILL FLAWLESS, LADY TAMS SURVIVE

In Men’s Volleyball, FEU outplayed erstwhile unbeaten and four-peat seeking UST Tigers in five hard played sets, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 15-13. Tams rise to 7-0 in standing while UST fell to 6-1. FEU’s Rodolfo Labrador led the Tamaraw charge with 21 attack points and 3 blocks. The last time these two teams faced each other was November last year at the finals of the 15th University Games where FEU won in similar fashion.

Meanwhile, rookie-laden Lady Tams survived round 1 by claiming its first win of the season at the expense of the UP Fighting Maroons in five sets as well, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 15-8. Veteran Maica Morada was the player of the game with 23 points.

In the Women’s main event – perennial contender La Salle Lady Archers thwarted defending champion UST Tigresses in 3 sets, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12 to sweep the first round of eliminations for the second straight season. DLSU’s Abigail MaraƱo scored 13 points, including three blocks, while Stephanie Mercado added 12 points for La Salle. UST’s Aiza Maizo is the best scorer with 16 points (15 attacks and 1 block).
